The State of NJ Barbershops: By the Numbers
We mapped every barbershop in New Jersey. Here's what the data tells us about the industry — county by county.
When we started building Barber Recruit, the first thing we did was map every barbershop in New Jersey. Not a sample. Not an estimate. Every single one we could find — licensed, active, and cutting hair. What we found tells a compelling story about an industry that's bigger, more dynamic, and more unevenly distributed than most people realize.
Where the shops are
New Jersey's barbershops are concentrated heavily in the northern half of the state. Essex County leads with the most barbershops of any county, driven by population density in cities like Newark, East Orange, and Irvington. Bergen, Passaic, and Hudson counties follow, forming a dense corridor of shops serving North Jersey's diverse communities.
The southern half of the state tells a different story. Counties like Salem, Hunterdon, and Warren have far fewer shops, reflecting both lower population and more spread-out geography. For barbers in these areas, finding the right shop often means a longer commute or relocating — which makes having a centralized platform to discover opportunities even more critical.
The compensation landscape
Commission and booth rental split roughly evenly across the state, but with clear regional patterns. Northern NJ leans heavily toward booth rental, particularly in Bergen, Essex, and Hudson counties where higher haircut prices ($45–$80+) make the flat-rent model more attractive for experienced barbers. Southern NJ trends more toward commission, where lower average prices make the guaranteed floor of commission more appealing.
The earning potential gap between regions is significant. A barber in Hoboken or Montclair charging $60 per cut on booth rental is operating in a fundamentally different economy than a barber in Vineland or Millville charging $25. Both are valid markets, but barbers moving between regions need to recalibrate their expectations and compensation model accordingly.
Booking platforms
Across the 1,190+ shops we mapped, booking platform adoption varies widely. The most common platforms in NJ are Squire, Booksy, Fresha, and Vagaro, with Squire being the most popular among barbershop-specific businesses. However, a significant number of shops — particularly older establishments — still operate on walk-ins only with no online booking at all.
For barbers evaluating shops, booking platform adoption is a useful signal. Shops that invest in booking technology tend to invest in marketing and client experience more broadly. A shop running Squire with an active Google Business profile is likely generating more consistent demand than a walk-in-only shop with no web presence — and that translates directly to your income.
What the data tells us about hiring
Across our dataset, roughly 40% of shops show indicators of active or recent hiring — either posting on social media, listing openings on generic job boards, or showing signs of chair availability. This suggests that at any given time, nearly half of NJ's barbershops are either looking for a barber or about to be.
Yet there's no centralized place where these openings are visible. A barber in Passaic County scrolling Instagram might miss a perfect opening in Bergen County because the shop owner posted it at 11pm and the algorithm buried it. A shop owner in Camden County might not know that a talented barber 20 minutes away in Gloucester County is looking for a new chair.
This is the gap Barber Recruit exists to close. When every shop is on one platform and every barber can search by location, compensation, and fit, the matching problem gets a lot simpler. The data is there — it just needs a home.
What's coming next
We'll be publishing county-by-county breakdowns over the coming months, with more granular data on compensation ranges, specialties in demand, and hiring trends by region. Our goal is to give both barbers and shop owners the information they need to make better decisions — whether that's choosing a market to work in or setting competitive compensation to attract top talent.
In the meantime, you can explore the full map and browse all 1,190+ shops on Barber Recruit right now.
